The small white bumps under the eyes and the bright red spots on the trunk — two of the most common things people put up with for years, and two of the quickest to deal with.

Milia

Milia are keratin trapped beneath the surface of the skin, most often around the eyes and on the cheekbones. They are not spots, they have no opening, and they will not come out however hard you press — which is why picking at them leaves marks and the milium behind.

They are cleared either with a precise CryoPen freeze or with a sterile lance that opens the surface so the keratin can be lifted out. Which we use depends on the site and the depth; around the eye we are conservative.

Cherry angiomas

The bright red domed spots that appear on the chest, back and arms from the thirties onward are benign clusters of small blood vessels. They are harmless, they are hereditary, and they tend to multiply with age. CryoPen collapses the vessels and the spot darkens and flakes away over one to two weeks.

The appointment

Seconds per lesion. No anaesthetic, no cutting, no stitches. Most clients have several treated in a single twenty-minute appointment and go straight back to work.

Afterwards

  • Redness at the site for a day or two
  • A small scab that lifts over one to two weeks
  • Keep it dry for forty-eight hours and do not pick
  • SPF over the site while it heals to avoid marking

Assessment first

Anything red that bleeds spontaneously, or anything that has changed in size, shape or colour, is assessed properly before treatment rather than assumed to be an angioma. We will not freeze a lesion we are unsure about — we will tell you to have it seen.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not squeeze milia out?

Because there is no opening. A milium is keratin sealed beneath the skin surface, so pressure only bruises the area and leaves the milium in place.

Are cherry angiomas dangerous?

No. They are benign clusters of blood vessels, they are hereditary and they tend to increase with age. They are removed for appearance only.

How long does it take to heal?

A small scab forms and lifts over one to two weeks. Keep the area dry for forty-eight hours, do not pick, and use SPF over the site while it settles.

Can you treat milia near the eyes?

Yes, and it is the most common site. We are conservative in that area and may use a sterile lance rather than a freeze depending on depth.
