How Gel-X works

A pre-shaped soft gel tip is sized to your natural nail, bonded with gel and cured under a lamp. The tip covers the whole nail plate rather than being glued at the free edge, which is what makes the join invisible and the set strong. It is then shaped and finished like any other nail.

Against acrylic

  • No liquid monomer, so no fumes
  • Minimal filing of the natural nail on application
  • No electric file needed for removal — they soak off
  • Lighter on the nail and more flexible, so less breakage

Length and shape

Tips come in a range of lengths and shapes — almond, coffin, square, stiletto — and are sized individually to each nail. If you want something dramatic, say so at booking so the time is allowed; if you work with your hands, we will steer you toward a shorter length that will actually survive the fortnight.

Infill or rebalance

Gel-X is infilled at the cuticle every three to four weeks, the same as BIAB. A full new set is only needed if the tips have been on for a long time or the shape is being changed. Soak-off removal takes twenty to thirty minutes and does not need a drill.

Gel-X or BIAB?

BIAB if your own nails are a reasonable length and you want strength; Gel-X if you want length you do not currently have. Plenty of clients alternate — Gel-X for a holiday or a wedding, BIAB in between while the natural nails recover length.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Gel-X better than acrylic?

It is gentler. There is no monomer and no odour, far less filing of the natural nail, and removal is a soak-off rather than drilling.

How long do they last?

Three to four weeks before infills, and they can be maintained indefinitely with rebalances rather than new sets.

Will they damage my nails?

Not when applied and removed properly. The tip bonds to the nail plate rather than being glued at the tip, and removal is by soaking.

Gel-X or BIAB?

Gel-X for length you do not have; BIAB for strength on nails that are already a reasonable length.
